Trout Fishing on Dix River

Trout FishingMost of Kentucky's free-flowing brown and rainbow trout streams are fairly small mountain creeks. Annual stocking rates range from 200 to 700 fish, depending on the length of the section managed for rainbow and brown trout and the amount of quality trout habitat. The Dix, which is annually stocked with 1,000 brown trout, falls under special regulations. Through the first two miles of the river downstream from Dix Dam, only artificial lures maybe used or possessed, and a 15-inch minimum size applies to brown trout. These strict regulations and generous stocking limits provides the angler a fun filled day of fishing but also ample opportunity to harvest a true trophy fish.

Access to the Dix can add its own challenge. High bluffs and private lands bound both sides of the river, eliminating all possible banks access. They only way toTrout Fishing get to the tail-waters is from the Kentucky River, by boat.

Canoe Creek Ranch offers anglers not only the chance to fish this truly magnificent trout stream, but also enjoy a breathtaking boat ride through the towering 300 foot limestone cliffs known as the Kentucky River Palisades. Home to several species of animals unique to this area. Salamanders washed down Trout Fishingfrom Eastern Kentucky on the crests of floods now dwell high above the river and are found nowhere else in Central Kentucky. Bobcats still roam the more remote portions of the Palisades, and endangered Gary and Indiana bats, and the rare Keene's bat inhabit caves along the spectacular cliffs; the only known breeding colony of Gray bats in the Bluegrass Region remains in this river corridor. Great blue herons glide over the water, kingfishers perch on branches above the river's edge, and endangered peregrine falcons, recently introduced, once again wheel and soar gracefully above the landscape. As you paddle your way through this river paradise you will also encounter 300 ft. tall High Bridge one of the biggest engineering marvels of the late 19th century.
